The turf race for 3-year-old fillies is named after the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games, located in the Adirondack mountains about 100 miles north of Saratoga. Originally known as the Nijana from its inception in 1984 until 1997, the Lake Placid has been run at various distances and has been carded at 1 1/8 miles since 1996. In 1988, 1991, 1992, and 1994 the Lake Placid was run in two divisions.
In 2013, Nellie Cashman crossed the wire first but was disqualified and placed third for interference in the stretch.
