by NYRA Press Office

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Saturday's 11-race Marylou Whitney Day card, featuring three graded stakes and highlighted by McKinzie's victory in the 92nd running of the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney, generated an all-sources handle record of $31,835,863, eclipsing the previous Whitney Day record of $30,153,138 set in 2017.

On-track handle was $7,078,192 with paid attendance of 40,791 for Saturday, August 3.

NYRA on Saturday celebrated the life and legacy of Mrs. Whitney, the beloved owner, breeder and philanthropist, who passed away on July 19 at the age of 93.

Live racing resumes on Sunday with an 11-race card highlighted by the inaugural running of the $1 million Saratoga Derby Invitational, the second leg of the Turf Trinity in NYRA's Turf Triple Crown series. The Saratoga Derby will be the centerpiece of a special one-hour Saratoga Live broadcast on FS1 beginning at 5 p.m. The day's card will also feature the Grade 2, $200,000 Adirondack and Grade 3, $200,000 Fasig-Tipton Waya. The racing action will get underway on FS2 beginning at 3:30 p.m.

On Saturday, August 22, 1987, the Travers Stakes celebrated its 118th running. While not a milestone number, that year’s edition was special for two reasons as it marked the first year the race boasted a $1 million purse, becoming Saratoga Race Course’s first seven-figure race; and the Travers field saw not only one of its best ever lineups, but also one of the most talented group of horses ever to compete against each other at the historic track.

NYRA CARES: Helping the next generation find a place in the thoroughbred industry

NYRA Press Office

There was a time when Annise Montplaisir, horse crazy as a young teenager, was part of racing’s “next generation.” Today, as a graduate of North Dakota State University and the Godolphin Flying Start program with a range of experience in the racing business, Montplaisir has joined the industry’s current generation. Along the way, she’s picked up something exceedingly valuable: a passion for using the lessons learned to help newcomers find their path in the industry as well.
