Pick 6 carryover of $130K into Sunday’s card at Belmont Park

by Keith McCalmont

Sunday’s Pick 6 will be boosted by a $130,292 carryover, as the multi-race wager went unsolved on Saturday at Belmont Park.

The $1 Pick 6, implemented at the current 48-day Belmont spring/summer meet, returned $43,430.50 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

Saturday’s Pick 6 sequence kicked off in Race 5 as Julien Leparoux guided Contained [No. 10, $35.80] to an upset score for trainer Jorge Duarte, Jr. in a seven-furlong claiming tilt for sophomore fillies on the Widener turf.

Luis Cardenas picked up his first of two wins on Saturday’s card, guiding Rosey’s Peach [No. 1, $22] to victory for Domenick Schettino in Race 6, a 6 ½-furlong claiming sprint on Big Sandy for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up.

Rockemperor [No. 3, $3.60] prevailed as the favorite in a 10-furlong inner-turf allowance optional-claiming tilt in Race 7 for four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown. Flavien Prat engineered the winning trip.

Zaajel [No. 4, $38.80] won the Grade 2, $250,000 Mother Goose as the longest shot on the board in the 1 1/16-mile trip over Big Sandy for sophomore fillies in Race 8. Trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher and piloted by Joel Rosario, Zaajel stalked and pounced to an upset win in the compact field of five.

Cardenas added his second win on the card with a late-running effort aboard Runaway Rumour [No. 9, $29] to capture the $100,000 Wild Applause at one-mile on the Widener turf for sophomore fillies. The New York-bred filly bested open company for the first time, rallying five-wide to stay undefeated in three starts for trainer Jorge Abreu.

With the carryover already confirmed, Back Channel [No. 10, $116] posted the day’s biggest upset to capture the 10th race finale, a six-furlong inner turf sprint for maiden fillies and mares 3-years-old and up.

Featuring a $1 bet minimum and 15 percent takeout, the Pick 6 wager requires bettors to select the first-place finisher of six designated races on the card. A total of 75 percent of the full pool, minus takeout, will be distributed to bettors who select the first-place finisher of all six races. A consolation payout of 25 percent of the net pool will be distributed to tickets selecting 5-of-6 winners.

In the event there are no tickets with six winners, there will be a carryover of 75 percent of the net pool into the next day of the meet with the remaining 25 percent of the net pool distributed as a consolation payout to tickets selecting the first-place finisher in the greatest number of races on the card. On carryover days, the Pick 6 is offered with a 24 percent takeout.

The $1 Pick 6 replaced the Empire 6, a jackpot style wager featuring a $0.20 bet minimum first offered in August 2019 at Saratoga Race Course.

Sunday’s Pick 6 kicks off in Race 4 at 2:31 p.m. Eastern and will include four turf races. First post on Sunday’s nine-race card is 1 p.m. Eastern.
